Brian's Coaching Journey

In the summer of 1995, my life changed forever. I was a 6-foot, 293-pound sophomore defensive lineman, a rising star who had gone from being a bullied eighth grader to a celebrated athlete. With recruiting letters arriving from top-tier programs like Rutgers, Temple, and Miami—even before my first varsity snap—I was seemingly at the top of my game. However, while my physical presence was undeniable, I was mentally and emotionally unequipped for the crushing weight of those expectations. Deep down, I was paralyzed by a fear of failure and the mounting pressure of maintaining my success. Without a proper support system, I struggled in silence. My old-school coaches focused solely on the field, offering little guidance for the psychological demands of being recruited.
Â
Overwhelmed and lacking the mindset tools to process my stress, I made the heartbreaking decision to quit the sport I loved. I chose to walk away because my 15-year-old brain saw quitting as the only way to eliminate the overwhelming external pressures. To this day, I still reflect on how different my path might have been if I’d had a coach to help me focus on internal growth rather than external validation.
I never got to know my full potential.Â
Decades later, my perspective shifted when I tentatively agreed to help coach my oldest son’s baseball team. That single 'yes' sparked a passion for coaching that has spanned from Little League to middle school to varsity sports across Central Virginia. Through this journey, I noticed a recurring tragedy: talented, smart, and passionate young athletes walking away from the sports they love for the same reasons I did—mental fatigue and lack of emotional resources.
I saw history repeating itself because these players lacked the off-field skills to navigate the highs and lows of competition, consistency, goal setting, and brain training.
This realization led to the founding of MINDSHIFT Athletics.
I sought out the best mentor I could find in Susan Hobson, a Princeton-educated leadership coach. Under her tutelage, I earned my certification as a High-Performance Mindset Coach for Athletes in May 2026 because I believe that elite athletes require elite mental training. Had I worked with a mindset coach when I was a teenager, I wouldn’t have made an emotional decision based on fear; I would have made a strategic one based on my goals.
I now dedicate my time to ensuring every athlete I work with has the tools, the roadmap, and the mental resilience needed to fulfill their true potential and stay in the game they love.
